On 26 March 2013,  PT Adaro Energy Tbk, won an Indonesia MDG Award for the category of private company in recognition of its HIV AIDS and infectious diseases eradication program.

The award, organized by the Office of the Special Envoy on Millennium Development Goals of the President of the Republic of Indonesia, was presented by State Minister for Womens’ Empowerment and Childrens’ Protection, Linda Amalia Sari, S. IP at Conrad Hotel, Bali and received by Adaro Energy’s CSR GM Okty Damayanti. Witnessing the award presentation was the President of the Republic of Indonesia Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

“For Adaro, this award represents the recognition on our meaningful contribution to the society. We hope our extensive campaign to combat narcotic drugs, HIV AIDS and other infectious diseases will encourage the creation of various community groups, especially youth groups, that will work hand-in-hand to conduct more effective counseling activities for this program,” explained Okty Damayanti.

The award committee led by Prof. Dr. Nila Moeloek has declared earlier that the award represents the government’s appreciation for the program development attained in 2012. The trophy must only be given to institutions deemed to have conducted effective programs qualified to be developed and replicated at a national level.

In a much tougher competition, 611 programs participated in Indonesia MDG Awards this year, a significant increase compared to 230 programs last year. Out of 611 programs, only 44 programs were shortlisted for nomination. The jury announced from the start of the competition that if a category has no participant considered qualified to receive the award, the category will be concluded without any winner.

Indonesia MDG Award consists of many different categories based on the participants’ background, such as regency/city municipality, private sector, NGO, and youth group, with a range of focuses including the health of mothers and children, nutrition, clean water and sanitation access, education, and the eradication of HIV AIDS and other infectious diseases.

Adaro’s program to combat narcotic drugs and HIV AIDS itself, is implemented by its foundation Yayasan Adaro Bangun Negeri, which was established in 2010 to undertake the group’s sustainable CSR programs in sixkabupaten (regencies) within the operational area. The program conducts excellent counseling activities involving more effective media and approaches that easily accepted by the target audience in the society, and has been successful in developing peer educators from various community groups like students, community leaders, religious leaders, high-risk groups, and pregnant women. Supported by Adaro’s training and counseling, they have now built the capability to carry out counseling independently, continuously expanding their scope to reach wider audience.
